Welcome to the Post Office Hotel Mitchell, a piece of Queensland history. Mitchell’s heritage dates back to its Aboriginal inhabitants, the Mandandanji and Gunggari peoples, who lived here for around 19,500 years. European exploration began in 1839 with Captain John Clements Wickham’s voyage. Edmund Morey established Mitchell Downs in 1862, where the first homestead later became the Mitchell Downs Hotel. In 1865, Mitchell Downs Post Office opened, later renamed Mitchell Post Office. Religious diversity thrived with the opening of St. Columba’s Catholic Church in 1884 and All Saints’ Anglican Church in 1889. Today, Mitchell stands as a testament to its rich history, offering a unique experience in the heart of Queensland’s outback.
